Damien

Uncurling himself from on top of a heating duct, Damien softly slid to the floor. He stood against the wall, waiting, listening. He had scooted up onto the duct as a group of men opened the outer door of the corridor he had been moving down. Damien considered his observations of the men he took at first to be soldiers. They had the air of well-trained and motivated terrorists.

As he waited in his hide, Damien watched teams working methodically through the corridors. They were hauling anyone they found into the open, killing them and moving on. A secondary team of three men would follow slowly and collect the bodies on a cart. Once it was full, they wheeled it away to wherever they stored the dead.

Their professionalism worried Damien. Terrorists, even well-trained ones, were not up to the level of these men. They were something different and would be harder to take out. He had not seen them moving in less than twos. He witnessed a tight team of five female fighters moving quickly down the corridor heading for the far section of the platform. At their head was an attractive woman. By the blood he had seen splashed across her front, a stone-cold killer. Listening intently to their conversation as they passed beneath him, Damien confirmed that they were Chechen. He knew there was going to be more trouble. Chechens were effective killers.

A steady stream of Chechens had jogged underneath him. They carried what looked like boxes of explosives. The teams were heading in both directions. Their actions and movements were precise. These men knew exactly where they were going. Working quickly, they had laid charges every 5 metres. They connected a tie line up to the ceiling and spliced it into what looked to Damien to be the platform’s own fibre optic network.

Damien had pondered what that could mean as he watched them work. In 10 minutes, they had cleared the space, their deadly packages left behind.

So, the Chechens are going to blow the platform.

Listening to the silence, Damien eased around the corner of a connecting passageway and weighed up his options. The number of Chechens who had made a beeline for the crane and cargo area had ruled out sanctuary in that direction. There was still the option of heading to the helicopter operations room. That was where he had been aiming to go. The Chechens, not by design, continued to cut across his route, slowing him down. By the way they were slaughtering everyone, they had no plans for holding hostages. As Damien pondered his next step, he heard the heavy thud of boots in the main corridor.

Damien eased himself slightly around the corner to allow his right eye to focus down the corridor. Hurrying towards him was a lone Chechen, a harassed and unhappy look on his face. The man looked like he was late to his own funeral. In his right hand he held a small black hard plastic case. The Chechen was not wearing armour.
